I recommend xubuntu and lubuntu which offer you the same core functionality (and awesome apt package management) and the share the benefit of running easily in vm. I don’t use an external RSS reader what I do think is happening though is that there’s some sort of memory leak.

You could tweak your setup to get better performance but you sound a little new so my advice is to not use unity/gnome shell and use different less graphic intensive desktop environment. It runs about the same as it did on my crappy <£300 pc from like 2012, even though I've assigned better stuff to the vm and have a much better pc now. Ubuntu, and most linux distros run really slowly in a virtual machine.
I've had this problem for a while, and it's quite annoying.
